We sit down with the mastermind behind some our favourite shoes to talk style, creativity, and summer plans

That, of course, is because it blends our ISSIMO aesthetic and fashion sense with the panache of Edgardo Osorio, Aquazzura’s founder and designer. The man knows how to make footwear that strikes the perfect balance between modern design and time-honoured craftsmanship, style and comfort, sexiness and elegance. We caught up with Edgardo to discuss our collaboration, talk inspiration, and compare summer plans.
Tell us about the collaboration with ISSIMO. What was the catalyst behind partnering up to create this capsule collection?
Edgardo Osorio: ISSIMO for me it’s the modern Dolce Vita edit in website form. It’s everything that I love and that is cool about Italy, done with the elegant eye of Marie-Louise. I’m also a fan of all Pellicano properties, so when I had to think of a shoe for our collab I dreamed of something retro Italian-chic, fashioned in a modern way.
How was working with Marie-Louise? What was the creation process like?
EO: So easy. We were both on the same page in terms of what we wanted: Something chic and with the easiness and glam of a 1960s Italian film. We met several times in my studio in Florence and went through mood boards we created together to get inspired.
What aspects were most important to you when designing the shoes?
EO: Elegance and playfulness are always important aspect of my creations. So is comfort. I want for women that wear Aquazzura to feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable.
Describe the collection in three words.
EO: Elegant, fun, colourful.
How did you choose the palette for the line?
EO: I was inspired by the colours of the Mediterranean Coast: The purple of the bougainvillea flowers, the orange of the tangerines, and the yellow of the Sorrento lemons.

Aquazzurissimo! It’s an explosion of Italian flair, a mix of timeless Mediterranean elegance with a playful soul.
As for yourself – What inspires you?
EO: I get inspired by many things. My travels are a big one, as is art in general. I love going to see exhibitions and discover new artists, but also books, movies, women… I take inspiration from everything that surrounds me.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
EO: Sophisticated, sensual, and playful.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Aquazzura. What does the milestone mean to you?
EO: These past 10 years have been amazing for me and for Aquazzura. The brand has grown so much, becoming internationally renowned all over the world. This anniversary represents a dream come true. I am humbled that I could be able to translate my greatest passion into my work.
How did you celebrate?
EO: The whole year has been a celebration! We launched and continue to launch special capsule collections; opened two new boutiques — one in Paris and one in Madrid — and recently created our first Aquazzura Casa Collection, which was one of my biggest dreams.
Is there a shoe that most represents you?
EO: The Tequila Sandals for sure! It’s one of my favourite styles, as it’s refined, sparkly and playful, and can be worn all-day long. I named it after my favourite drink – they are shoes that make you dance and smile.
Which pair of shoes should every woman have in her wardrobe?
EO: The wonderful thing about being a woman is that there are so many shoes you can have for all of life’s different moments.
A great pair of black pumps like the Aquazzura Bow Tie Pumps should be essential, because they are timeless and chic. A fun and sexy sandal like the ISSIMO x Aquazzura Mule is also a must, to go out for dinner or to dance the night away. Then, of course, a chic flat, like the ISSIMO x Aquazzura Flat, which is great for work. What’s the secret to making a shoe that’s stylish and comfortable?
EO: I founded Aquazzura with comfort in mind. I think women should have fun while wearing my shoes, without having to compromise on the rest. That’s the reason why, when I started the brand, I hired an artisan who has been making footwear for over 40 years. Together, we developed lasts and shapes that fit better on the foot and that distribute the weight of the body not only on the ball, but also on the arch and the back. We also put extra padding on the soles, so that they are softer when you walk. I like to think Aquazzura shoes have a soul, something extra that you cannot explain and that makes people smile and feel good.
Do you prefer designing heels or flats?
EO: Both! I love designing different styles of shoes and, most importantly, make women feel feminine and confident. Laced up sandals are my favourites though, and all fun shoes in general!
What are your summer plans?
EO: Capri and the Amalfi Coast at end of June and early July. Then August in Antiparos, Greece, to really unwind.
