Nestled along the Tyrrhenian coast and only a short drive from Rome, Palo Laziale is a bit of a hidden gem – not to mention, of course, the backdrop for our beloved La Posta Vecchia Hotel. The area offers a rich tapestry of history, nature, and culinary treats, from big hitters like the Etruscan Necropolis of Banditaccia and Oasi di Palo to lesser-known treasures waiting to be discovered.
What hidden treasures, you ask? Where to begin! Here’s your curated guide to the most alluring sights and activities beyond the beaten path in Palo Laziale. All you have to do is book a room at our charmer of a property (a bit of a historical place itself, with its Italian art treasures and on-site private museum) and start off from there.

And if you’re not sure when to come, exactly, might we recommend spring? With sagre at every corner, blossoming flowers and a delectable offer for your taste buds right at our hotel (read below for more), the balmy season is the perfect time to come pay us a visit.

Escape into nature at Macchiagrande, part of the Litorale Romano Nature Reserve. With its coastal sandy dunes and a beautiful Mediterranean forest, this WWF Oasis is one of the areas with the greatest environmental value along the Lazio coast, and a paradise for birdwatching, tranquil walks, or picnicking amid pristine Mediterranean flora. The reserve’s trails lead to serene beaches and hidden lagoons, perfect for a moment of solitude and connection with nature, although if you’re lucky enough, you might be ‘accompanied’ by deer, porcupines, foxes, badgers and owls during your visit.
Take some time to unplug and unwind here, then consider heading to Torre Flavia, a stretch of shoreline marked by a crumbling medieval watchtower rising from the waves. A protected natural habitat for bird species, this secluded beach bestows a quiet, magical atmosphere that makes it ideal for a peaceful swim or sunset stroll.
Had enough me-time? Then the quaint hilltop village of Ceri, just inland from Palo Laziale, might just be the perfect spot for you, filled as it is with artisanal ceramic shops where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary design. Wander through its narrow streets, admire frescoed churches, and pick up a unique souvenir to remind you of your journey.

A quiet archaeological site near the sea town of Santa Marinella, only a quick 30-minute drive from La Posta Vecchia, the Roman Fish Ponds of Punta della Vipera – le Peschiere Romane – reveal the ingenuity of ancient aquaculture. Carved into the coastal rock, these ancient saltwater pools were used by the Romans to farm fish and seafood. The site offers a fascinating peek into the area’s maritime history and is a perfect stop for history enthusiasts.
Next up, head inland towards the picturesque village of Trevignano, on Lake Bracciano. The little brother of Bracciano, this small medieval village seems to be out of a movie, with its maze-like alleyways and sunny atmosphere. Start at the elegant Renaissance-era municipal building, then head towards the 18th century gate bearing a clock and into the centro storico. Stroll at leisure, stop for a pastry and an espresso at Ermete, and go back to La Posta Vecchia for dinner.

Palo Laziale has plenty of great fish restaurants. If you’re looking for something a little further afield, though, consider heading to Fregene, half an hour away. Here you’ll find La Scialuppa da Salvatore, a fantastic seafood restaurant famous for their linguine alle vongole and fresh catch of the day, which are paired with breathtaking views of the sea. The wine list is just as impressive, with Italian labels that complement the briny flavors of the cuisine.
