Uncovering Italy’s Superlatives in people, places and things

Explore Villa di Tiberio in Sperlonga

An Empire by the Sea

From 14 to 37 AD, Tiberius reigned as Emperor of Rome, an expanse which crossed seas and continents. But it wasn’t until 1957 that Tiberius’ secret seaside villa was discovered in natural cave along the Lazio coast near the beautiful town of Sperlonga. Archaeologist Darius Arya explores the villa, grotto and museum that now houses the impressive Hellenistic Baroque statue groups found on the site.
