ISSIMO’s Travel Guide to Riding A Vespa Around Ischia

Three unforgettable scooter routes around Ischia

There’s no better way to experience Ischia than on two wheels. From the winding coastal roads to sleepy hilltop villages, a scooter lets you slip straight into island life – sun on your face, sea at your side. Base yourself at our beloved Mezzatorre, tucked away on its own private bay, and you’re perfectly placed to set off on adventures: natural hot springs, volcanic peaks, and pastel fishing towns are all just a ride away. Here are three routes that capture the island’s magic, best discovered with the throttle open and nowhere to be but the road ahead.

1. Soak & Scenic: The Sorgeto Hot Springs Loop

Few things say Ischia quite like the island’s volcanic waters, and the ride down toward Sorgeto Bay sets the scene perfectly. On a scooter, you can zig-zag through terraced vineyards and sleepy villages until you reach the rocky cove where hot springs bubble straight into the sea. Locals come here year-round for a dip, especially at sunset, when the water glows gold. Park your scooter at the top and take the steps down – it’s worth every one. On the ride back, follow the cliff-hugging road and stop for panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian Sea, the horizon melting into Capri on a clear day.

PIT STOP
Grab a simple seafood lunch at Antica Fattoria Greca di Punta Chiarito - Azienda Agricola Ruffano, where organic ingredients meet island traditions.

2. Summit & Swirl: The Monte Epomeo Ascent

At the heart of Ischia rises Monte Epomeo, the island’s volcanic crown. Riding up its winding roads on a scooter feels like entering a different world: cooler air, chestnut groves, and glimpses of the sea flashing between trees. Stop midway at a countryside trattoria for a glass of Biancolella, the island’s crisp white wine, before pushing on. From the summit (the last stretch on foot), the entire Bay of Naples lies before you – Vesuvius, Capri, Procida, all framed by endless blue. It’s a ride that captures Ischia’s contrasts: wild and gentle, cultivated and untamed, always surprising.

PIT STOP
Il Bracconiere is the kind of rustic trattoria where you’ll find hearty rabbit stew (Ischia’s signature dish) and tumblers of local wine poured generously.

3. Village Loop: Forio to Sant’Angelo

Start in Forio, with its pastel piazze and the whitewashed church of Santa Maria del Soccorso clinging to a cliff. Then let your scooter carry you along the coast, past citrus groves and palm-fringed gardens, toward Sant’Angelo, the island’s chic fishing hamlet. Cars are banned here, but arriving by scooter and walking the final stretch feels cinematic: narrow lanes spilling into squares, cafes buzzing with conversation, and boats bobbing in the tiny harbor. Pause for a seafood lunch or a scoop of lemon granita before winding your way back, with the late afternoon sun turning the coastline honey-gold.

PIT STOP
In Forio, stop to admire Ischia’s breathtaking sunset from the square of the Chiesa del Soccorso, and in Sant’Angelo reward yourself with a freshly squeezed orange or lemon juice topped with lemon granita (locally known as “Bomba”) from Enzo’s, right on the square.

Why Scooters Work Best

Ischia isn’t made for rushing. Its roads are narrow, winding, and often steep – perfect for two wheels. A scooter gives you freedom to slip into small lanes, pause at lookouts, and stop spontaneously for a swim or a spritz.

As part of our Il Dolce Far Bene sustainability program, Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa offers electric scooters for you to rent, letting you discover Ischia all in eco-friendly style.

Traveler Tip

Head out in the morning before the heat builds, pack swimwear and a towel for impromptu dips, and never miss a roadside café stop. The best memories often come not from the destination, but the ride itself.
