‘Beauty’ in the Renaissance was all about the finest natural ingredients used in daily rituals that brought as much sensory pleasure as they did skin-loving benefits. We have to say, nothing much has changed in our book 500-odd years later! Many of our favourite skincare ingredients and products are inspired by ancient natural beauty inventions and principles when plant-based ingredients were the basis of aromatic treatments that indulged the mind and the body.
That’s why we make a beeline for the Beauty Club every time we visit La Posta Vecchia, where the expert therapists work their magic with specially designed treatments that make us glow from the inside out. ‘Beauty’ takes on a whole new meaning when the highest-quality treatments immerse you even more deeply in the surroundings of our fabulous villa by the seaside, with its lush gardens that yield the most superb natural ingredients, which are as good for skin care as they are for eating!
Skincare from Nature
There were no fancy ten-step skincare rituals in the Renaissance like there are today, nor were there long lists of strange ingredients, additives or preservatives you couldn’t pronounce. Nature provided an abundance of gifts for skin, hair and body care. In those times, people used gentle cleaners made from natural ingredients like milk and water infused with herbs, while common exfoliators were created from ground-up grains and nuts. When it came to moisturisers, natural oils like olive and almond oil were used to keep the skin hydrated, as were thermal waters, which were often with flowers and herbs for added aromatherapy benefits.

Of course, we’re well aware of some of the wacky and even harmful ingredients that went into beauty potions back in the Renaissance days too, and we’re more than happy to leave those behind! However, the same fundamental principles of using healthy, naturally-derived ingredients to keep skin clean, supple and glowing is still our go-to approach today. Natural is best, just like Nonna always says!
Pampering at La Posta Vecchia
When we want to pamper ourselves with something extra special, we take time to indulge at Posta Vecchia Beauty Club with a heavenly 60-minute treatment the includes a 25-minute scrub with salt and herbs from the villa’s garden, a shower, and a 25-minute massage to rehydrate the skin.

Just as it was used in Renaissance times, our therapists use salt for its cleansing and purifying properties, promoting the elimination of dead cells, reactivating circulation and restoring the skin’s radiance. Rosemary from the villa’s garden is used as a natural healer, antiseptic, and improves whole-body circulation while also having an invigorating aromatherapy effect.
Our therapists also use hand-picked rose petals full of vitamins A and C, which are potent antioxidants that promote collagen production to make the skin glow. To finish, a massage rehydrates the skin and relaxes the entire body using a special blend of cold-pressed sesame oil which promotes skin health according to Ayurvedic traditions.
Energising Body and Soul Retreat
Who said the pampering stops there? For the month of October (1st October – 3rd November), the ‘Pure Treatment’ is part of a new Energising Body and Soul Retreat exclusively available at La Posta Vecchia.
