ISSIMO x Women in Wine: Marina Cvetić

Meet the woman who has built an international identity for Abruzzo wine

Few figures embody the resilience and forward vision of Italian wine quite like Marina Cvetić. Born in Belgrade and rooted in Abruzzo since the late 1980s, she has spent more than three decades shaping the identity of Masciarelli Tenute Agricole, the winery founded by her late husband, Gianni Masciarelli.

Together, Marina and Gianni put Abruzzo on the world wine map, championing Montepulciano and Trebbiano when few believed in their international potential. Today, Marina continues that mission, blending respect for local terroir with a global outlook. Her eponymous line, Marina Cvetić, reflects her own stylistic vision – intense, elegant, and unmistakably personal.

Now joined by her daughters Miriam Lee and Chiara Ludovica, Marina leads Masciarelli into the future with a focus on sustainability, enotourism, and women’s leadership. Here, she shares her journey in her own words.

The early years with Gianni Masciarelli, in life and in the cellar – what were they like?

The early years were full of energy, discovery, and passion. Working alongside Gianni meant living every day with intensity and vision. In the cellar as in life, we shared enthusiasm for innovation, a deep respect for the land, and an unshakable determination to show the world Abruzzo’s potential.

Which values of Gianni’s legacy did you want to preserve, and which did you seek to renew?

I’ve always wanted to preserve the beating heart of his work: the bond with the territory, the pursuit of quality and excellence, and the valorization of native grape varieties.

From Belgrade to Abruzzo: how did you transform a family story into a modern, international vision?

My personal journey has always carried an international breath. Coming to Abruzzo meant bringing together different cultures and sensibilities. This mix influenced my approach to wine: respect for Italian tradition combined with a broader outlook, allowing me to dialogue with the world while keeping strong roots.

Your ‘Marina Cvetić’ line is both a personal tribute and a stylistic manifesto. What does it express about you?

It represents my idea of wine: intense, elegant, with a strong personality. It was born from a desire to tell a feminine vision – decisive yet sensitive – and always consistent with the quality and style that Gianni set as our standard.

Masciarelli works across all four Abruzzo provinces. What is the challenge – and strength – of this diversity of terroirs?

It’s a challenge we embraced with conviction. Each province has unique characteristics of climate, soil, altitude, and terroir. Working on a regional scale lets us explore all the nuances of Abruzzo and reflect them in our wines. It’s complex, but this diversity is our greatest richness.

Today you and your daughter Miriam lead the estate together. What changes with two generations of women at the helm?

It’s a natural and beautiful evolution. Miriam Lee has a modern sensitivity, an international education, and she focuses particularly on Asia with a very clear vision of wine’s future. I bring experience, memory, and knowledge of the territory. Together, we complement each other. And now my younger daughter, Chiara Ludovica, has begun taking her first steps in the company. Femininity here is not just presence – it’s a leadership style, based on listening, precision, and determination.

From the Castello di Semivicoli to wine tourism: how do you tell the story of hospitality through wine?

The Castello di Semivicoli is where wine meets beauty and art. It’s not just a hotel, but a meeting point between history, art, nature, and wine. Hospitality for me means welcoming people with an authentic experience of excellence that speaks of our territory, our work, and our way of living wine.

Masciarelli champions sustainable and organic practices. What does “sustainability” mean to you today?

For years, Masciarelli has gone beyond sustainability, adopting a regenerative agriculture model across its estates. We promote practices that face climate challenges while improving quality: integrating floral species, protecting ecological corridors, and collaborating with Professor Giovanni Bigot to reduce environmental impact and regenerate ecosystems. For me, sustainability today means responsibility—not just preserving, but actively improving the land we will pass to future generations.
