The Good Kind of Slow

The Good Kind of Slow

As summer winds down, The Benissimo Club makes a case for taking care of yourself, and taking your time, at Pellicano Hotels

There comes a moment towards the end of the Italian summer when everything begins to soften a bit. The midday heat loses its edge, the beaches grow quieter and that walk you contemplated in August suddenly sounds like a very good idea.

Welcome to slow season

September and October rarely get the attention lavished on high summer, but that's precisely part of their appeal. There are still lunches to be had outside and swims in the sea, only now there's room for other things too: a long walk before breakfast, an afternoon on a paddleboard, a bike ride that doesn't require setting an alarm for dawn.

At Pellicano Hotels, these quieter weeks also happen to suit The Benissimo Club particularly well. The idea behind Benissimo has always been uncomplicated: taking care of yourself on holiday shouldn't require turning your stay into a wellness retreat. A swim counts. So does a good night's sleep. Stretching your body, spending time outside and eating something delicious can all comfortably belong to the same day.

And when the temperatures begin to dip, the outdoors becomes particularly inviting.

At Hotel Il Pellicano, that might mean heading out along the paths of Monte Argentario before returning to the hotel for lunch. At Mezzatorre, there's the island of Ischia to explore, on foot or by bike, with the sea never far away. La Posta Vecchia, meanwhile, puts the coast and countryside north of Rome within easy reach. Benissimo's QR-guided hiking, biking and swimming routes are designed to encourage exactly this sort of exploration, with e-bikes and paddleboards adding a few more possibilities.

Not that every morning needs an itinerary, of course. A yoga mat in your room is an invitation, if you feel inclined, to go outside for twenty minutes, roll it out and find your inner balance. Or you might decide that today's preferred form of movement is swimming out to a paddleboard and lying on it in the sun

Because, you see, the Benissimo approach leaves plenty of room for pleasure. There's no expectation that a morning spent moving should be followed by an austere lunch, or that an afternoon in the spa means saying no to aperitivo. The philosophy was built around balance, with good food, organic wine and long meals considered perfectly compatible with looking after yourself

Perhaps this is why the end of the season feels so well suited to it. Italy becomes easier to explore when you aren't organising the day around escaping the hottest hours. You can go further on foot, spend longer outside and let plans develop according to what you feel like doing rather than what the temperature permits.

Plus, really, there is something satisfying about discovering familiar summer places at this point in the year. So take the bike. Unroll the mat. Carry the paddleboard down to the water. Then order lunch. There is still plenty of summer left in Italy, and you just might enjoy it differently.
