Your Own Corner of Hotel Il Pellicano

October 15, 2026

Meet Villa La Cicala, a storied private retreat beginning a new chapter at Hotel Il Pellicano

There are times when you want to check into a hotel. And then there are times when you want the restaurant, the Beach Club and the perfectly made Negroni, but would quite like a front door of your own.

Enter Villa La Cicala.

Opening in May 2027, Hotel Il Pellicano's new five-bedroom villa sits among the Mediterranean vegetation of Monte Argentario, within the hotel's grounds and a little removed from its main building. Yet this isn't a hotel villa created from scratch. It was once the private summer home of a famous Italian actress, who would retreat here with her family during the warmer months.

That history still matters to the house today. It was a place built around villeggiatura: long summers spent indoors and out, family rituals around the table, embroidered linens and the particular collection of objects that accumulates when a house is lived in year after year. The aim for Villa La Cicala is to retain something of that feeling: not simply somewhere to stay, but somewhere that already has a life of its own.

What's in a name?

Quite a lot, in this case. Villa La Cicala takes its name from the cicada, one of the most familiar sounds of an Italian summer. As temperatures rise, its distinctive call becomes part of the soundtrack of Mediterranean afternoons and evenings.

The name also continues a tradition at Il Pellicano itself, where cottages are named after birds associated with the coast, from Airone and Cormorano to Gabbiano. Here, the cicala points instead to the landscape surrounding the house.

And there is plenty of it. Monte Argentario's Mediterranean macchia is characterised by hardy evergreen vegetation adapted to its dry summers: holm oak, strawberry tree, juniper, myrtle and aromatic shrubs including rosemary are among the plants typical of this coastal landscape. The result is a house that feels tucked into its surroundings, in a way that feels organic and cohesive.

Private Garden with Sea View

That relationship with the landscape is built into the architecture itself. Villa La Cicala unfolds across several levels, following the contours of the terrain. Its stone, terracotta, brick and dark timber beams belong to the Tuscan architectural vocabulary found throughout this stretch of the Argentario.

There is another connection that makes the house feel particularly close to Il Pellicano: Villa La Cicala was built in the same period and by the same architect as the hotel. Both belong to a generation of villas created along this coast from the 1960s onwards, when the Argentario began attracting actors and other international figures drawn to its landscape and, importantly, the privacy it afforded.

The renovation builds on that existing character. Marie-Louise Sciò, working with Pellicano Hotels' in-house Architecture and Interior Design team, is retaining architectural elements including the wooden beams and the house's characteristic mix of materials.

Inside, the Mediterranean landscape continues to provide the cues. The design looks back to the villa's 1960s origins, bringing natural materials and traditional craftsmanship together with terracotta floors, wicker furniture and striped upholstery in a palette of blues and warmer earthy shades. Many of the furnishings are being designed specifically for the house.

Bedroom

The result is recognisably Pellicano, while still belonging to Villa La Cicala. In the living room, existing arches and heavy timber beams sit alongside low-slung furniture and generous sofas. The bedroom is quieter, framed by pale blue textiles. And then there's the kitchen: marble shelves, ceramics and a table at its centre make it a room intended to be used, best if for an intimate gathering with family and friends.

Make yourself at home

Because that, really, is the pleasure of Villa La Cicala. You can use it as a house.

Breakfast doesn't require leaving your pyjamas. Lunch can happen around your own table. A family or group of friends can disappear into the garden for the day. The villa has its own sauna and outdoor gym, while the different levels and indoor and outdoor spaces allow everyone to find a corner of their own.

Living Room

Even getting to the sea is part of living here. A panoramic hillside path winds down through the greenery and Mediterranean macchia, with shaded areas and benches along the way for stopping to take in the view before continuing towards the rocky coastline below.

And whenever the mood changes, the heart of Hotel Il Pellicano is close at hand. Guests can head to the hotel's restaurants, swimming pool, Beach Club, boutique and spa, or call for a golf cart driven by the hotel staff.

That combination feels particularly true to the house's history. People have been coming to this corner of the Argentario for generations to do something wonderfully simple: disappear for the summer without disappearing altogether.

Villa La Cicala offers the same proposition in a new guise. A house surrounded by nature, the sea at the end of the path and all the pleasures of Il Pellicano within reach.

That's what we call a perfect holiday home.
