Capturing Campania

Brett Lloyd can’t get enough of Campania, in particular Napoli and Ischia. The British photographer, who has captured fashion and lifestyle for magazines like DUST, Dazed & Confused, British and US Vogue, and worked with Dior, Louis Vuitton, Off-White, Maison Margiela and Adidas, is captivated by the beauty of Sud Italia. Snapping photos of Napoli and Ischia created a formidable friendship with Marie-Louise and a life-long love for Ischia.

La Bella Napoli

What initially brought you to Napoli?

I came to Naples for the first time in 2009 to visit my friend [creative director] Mavi Stiano in Sorrento. The plan was to arrive in Napoli train station from Rome and jump on the Circumversuviana train to her house but I was typically late and missed that last train. I walked out of the station and into the city for the first time at about around 10pm one hot August night and was amazed. I have been coming to Naples for ten years now. Each summer, I visit for two months and dive straight into the magic and mayhem.

 What’s your neighbourhood?

I stay a few streets into Monte di Dio behind Piazza Plebiscito. You have the joys that come with staying in the Spanish Quarter whilst also being very close to the sea for those morning swims. My favorite street in the city (and one of the oldest) is also there – Via Pallonetto Santa Lucia.

Can you share with us 3 things to do and see in Naples?

  1.  Sunbathing and eating in Marechiaro. Hostaria La Vela is one of my favorite restaurants
  2. Seeing Caravaggio’s Seven Acts of Mercy at the Pio Monte della Misericordia
  3. Enjoying a Negroni with friends in Piazza Bellini in the evening and watching the world go by.

The list changes every year . . .

Ischia and Mezzatorre in limited edition

Two years ago, Lloyd visited Ischia and captured the magic of Mezzatorre in a photo series he shared on Instagram. Unbeknownst to Lloyd, Marie-Louise stumbled upon the photo on Instagram, and a collaboration and a friendship were born.  Lloyd’s beautiful Mezzatorre photograph is now available on ISSIMO in a limited edition of 30 signed prints.

“I first came to Ischia to visit Castello Aragonese. I’m in love with it. The legend of Typhoeus is so romantic – a giant chained under the island whose tears flow in the thermal waters,” shares Lloyd. “My time at Mezzatorre was bliss, we only left the hotel once to the antique jewelry store in Piazza Santa Restituta. I bought a Napoli gold and sapphire ring with engravings of Pathenope. I hope next year, fingers crossed, that I can visit the Good Friday Procession. It looks magical.”

In addition to his beautiful editorial work and limited edition prints, Lloyd will be publishing a photography art book on Naples this upcoming winter. “It’s a testament to the intoxicating joy of the city and its people. I’m beyond excited to share it, I have been working on it for three summers now and it is my love letter to the city.”
