Feeling Bubbly

Feeling Bubbly

In praise of the hotel bath, and the very Italian pleasure of doing absolutely nothing for a while

When was the last time you took a bath? If we had to guess, it was probably when you had a little time to spare and felt like indulging yourself. Because baths require time, and perhaps you simply haven’t come across one worth clearing your schedule for lately. Yet.

That’s where the hotel bath comes in. On holiday, there are no emails waiting to be answered in the next room, no laundry that needs folding and, crucially, someone else is dealing with the towels. You can fill the tub to an entirely unreasonable level, stay there until your fingers wrinkle and emerge only when aperitivo starts sounding more appealing than another ten minutes in the water.

At Pellicano Hotels, in particular, there are bathtubs that make a particularly convincing case for staying put.

At Mezzatorre, you can sink into the bubbles with the sea framed through the window in front of you, sunlight bouncing off the water outside.

At Hotel Il Pellicano, a bath might sit among marble and billowing curtains, with the terrace and a slice of Argentario blue just beyond the doors.

And then there is La Posta Vecchia, where bathing can become considerably more theatrical: one magnificent tub is carved from richly veined pink stone and tucked beneath a sweeping staircase, looking almost too beautiful to get into. Almost.

Because a good bath isn't really about the bathtub. It's about everything that happens once the taps are running.

Meet the Benissimo bathing experience, a blissful treat of mineral-rich marine salts, a soothing body oil that goes onto dry skin before you step in; cleansing and exfoliation ‘potions’ (really, they are that magically good), and a lotion to finish it all, brought straight to your room whenever you fancy (though we would personally recommend the time of day when the light starts to soften). None of this needs to be rushed: you decide when it’s time to step out.

And while you’re there, why not treat yourself to something more: another chapter of your book while the water is still warm, a look outside towards the sea, a glass of wine if the occasion calls for it, or simply the opportunity to stay exactly where you are for a little longer. One of the luxuries of being away is discovering that taking care of yourself doesn't always have to involve doing something.

It's an idea that sits comfortably within The Benissimo Club's particular approach to wellbeing. A holiday can contain a morning swim or a long walk, but restoration has its quieter forms too. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for yourself is close the bathroom door and disappear for an hour. And when eventually you do get out? Lotion, robe, aperitivo. In that order. Probably.
