On modern glamour, the pleasure of dressing up and why the best clothes are made for going somewhere

Some clothes are made for work. Taller Marmo would rather make clothes for everything that happens afterwards.

Founded in 2013 by Riccardo Audisio and Yago Goicoechea, the Milan-based label has built its world around fluid kaftans, dramatic silhouettes and unapologetic glamour, drawing inspiration from the jet-set style of the 1960s and '70s and the craftsmanship of Italian fashion. The original idea was simple: to create pieces with enough quality and character to stay in your wardrobe for years, rather than clothes driven by logos or a particular season.

Travel has been part of that world from the beginning. Taller Marmo's clothes are designed for leisure in its broadest and most enjoyable sense: holidays, dinners, parties, boats and those occasions when getting dressed is something you do purely because you feel like it.

We spoke with co-founder Yago Goicoechea about dressing for pleasure, bringing the glamour of the past into the present, the Italian artisans who taught him his craft and the role travel plays in the Taller Marmo world.

How would you define glamour today?

For me, modern glamour is very intentional. Classic glamour can sometimes feel a little anachronistic now, whereas today it's about deciding, "This is how I want my hair, this is the dress I want to wear, this is how I want to feel."

You take elements from the past, whether that's a kaftan, a particular hairstyle, a piece of jewellery or even an attitude, and create a little collage that you bring into the present. There's also an element of fun in that awareness. It's being able to say, Why not? This is how I feel like dressing today.

Travel seems to be everywhere in the Taller Marmo world. How does it influence what you design?

We always say our clothes aren't designed for work. When we started, there was this image of the strong career woman always wearing a blazer, and we wanted to create the opposite of that. Our clothes are designed for leisure.

The kaftan is the backbone of Taller Marmo, and when you imagine yourself wearing one, you never picture yourself somewhere stressful. You're entertaining friends at home, on holiday or on a boat. It communicates an idea of self-care and wellbeing without needing a logo or a statement.

Travel is naturally part of that world. Probably 90 percent of our inspiration comes from the 1960s and '70s and that jet-set universe you see in the photographs of Slim Aarons. We take those references and try to translate them into something that feels modern.

Italian craftsmanship is an important part of Taller Marmo. What does making the collection in Italy bring to the brand?

Italy gave us craftsmanship and generational knowledge. When Riccardo and I left school to start the brand, we ended up working with a Sicilian seamstress who essentially taught us everything. Pattern cutting, sewing, finishing. She treated us like her children, although she also shouted at us constantly! She became our boss, really.

That relationship with craftsmanship remains incredibly important. One of our first suppliers was a silk company in Como founded in the 1890s, which is still run by the same family generations later. Sometimes we select fabrics from their archive, and some textiles are still produced on semi-automatic looms dating from the 1950s and '60s. That's something incredibly special about Italy.

Can what we wear actually change the way we experience a trip?

Absolutely. On holiday you have more time to think about what you're going to wear, and there's more pleasure in getting dressed. You might decide, Tonight I want to feel fabulous, put on that one piece and suddenly the whole evening feels different.
