The View from Ischia

As the America’s Cup arrives in Naples, Mezzatorre offers another way to experience the Bay

In the summer of 2027, all eyes will be on the Bay of Naples. For the first time in its history, the America’s Cup will be contested in Italy, bringing some of the world’s fastest sailing boats to the waters beneath Vesuvius. There will be racing, crowds and plenty of reasons to spend a little more time looking out to sea.

But there is more than one way to experience it.

Across the water, Ischia offers a different perspective. The island sits at the other end of the bay, close enough to Naples to feel part of the occasion, but with its own particular way of doing summer. And tucked into its northwestern corner, surrounded by seven hectares of Mediterranean greenery and overlooking the sea, Mezzatorre makes a compelling argument for turning a day at the races into a proper Italian holiday.

The America’s Cup itself will unfold over several weeks. The Louis Vuitton Cup begins on 22 May, followed by the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup events, before the main America’s Cup Match takes place from 10 to 19 July. It means that, rather conveniently, the sailing coincides with some of the loveliest weeks to be in the Bay of Naples.

At Mezzatorre, however, there is no need to organise the entire holiday around a race schedule. Mornings might begin with a swim beneath the hotel’s distinctive watchtower or breakfast overlooking the water. There are thermal pools to disappear into, shady corners for reading and lunches that have a habit of stretching well into the afternoon. Ischia itself provides plenty of reasons to leave the hotel too, from little coastal towns and beaches to gardens, vineyards and restaurants worth crossing the island for.

Then there is the sea.

Last season, Mezzatorre welcomed a new boat designed to take guests beyond the hotel and explore Ischia and the surrounding coastline from the water. In 2027, when the Bay of Naples becomes the setting for sailing’s most famous competition, being able to head out onto it will feel particularly apt.

And perhaps that is the pleasure of experiencing the America’s Cup from Ischia. You can go looking for the action when you want it and leave it behind when you don’t. Spend a day in Naples soaking up the atmosphere around the competition, then cross the bay and return to an island where the evening has its own priorities: a swim before dinner, an aperitivo overlooking the sea, somewhere good to eat.

You don’t need to know your tacks from your jibes to appreciate the spectacle, either. Part of the fascination is simply watching these extraordinary boats move across one of Italy’s most recognisable landscapes, with Naples, Vesuvius and the islands of the bay becoming part of the scenery.

So yes, by all means come for the America’s Cup. Watch the boats, follow the racing and spend a day or two in Naples while the city is caught up in it all. But when it comes to deciding where to wake up the next morning, we’ll take the view from Ischia.
